At Italian Continental Stores (The Italian Shop) in Maidenhead, we hosted a special screening of Rome, Open City, directed by Roberto Rossellini, where Anna Magnani’s powerful performance highlighted a moving celebration of Italian neorealism and culture through film, food, drink, and shared community experience.
Last night at Italian Continental Stores (The Italian Shop), Maidenhead, we dimmed the lights and travelled back to 1945 for a special screening of Rome, Open City.
Directed by Roberto Rossellini, this powerful film is one of the foundations of Italian neorealism. Shot in Rome just after the Second World War, it tells the story of ordinary people living under Nazi occupation with their courage, fear, love and resistance.
Watching it together upstairs at the shop made it even more special.
There’s something different about experiencing a film like this as a community. The performance of Anna Magnani in particular left the room completely silent at times- raw, honest, unforgettable.
These cinema nights aren’t just about watching a film.
They’re about celebrating Italian culture in all its forms, food, drink, conversation and storytelling.
We would love to see you at the next one!
